Building L'Arche Sudbury Place Together

L'Arche is Home

Construction of a new, multi-use, 4.5-acre, affordable housing complex, called L’Arche Sudbury Place.

What we’re trying to achieve

L’Arche Sudbury Inc. has significant experience in the developmental sector that informs our understanding of how to deliver services to: adults with developmental disabilities, adults who benefit from group living settings, adults who live in isolation, and Transitional Aged Youth. Having quality, accessible social and developmental services in the City of Greater Sudbury remains a challenge. The City and Manitoulin Regions have an urgent need to increase capacity and enhance the quality of accessible spaces in the area to address long and growing waitlists. The construction of a new housing and program support hub will allow L’Arche Sudbury to deliver the developmental services and supports outlined in Journey to Belonging (2021) – Ontario government’s long-term vision for services for people with developmental disabilities.

L’Arche Sudbury Inc. proposes the construction of an innovative, multi-use affordable housing project, called L’Arche Sudbury Place on our 4.5-acre property, located on Bancroft Drive in Sudbury Ontario’s Minnow Lake neighbourhood.  The complex will raise the community standard for accessibility and inclusiveness, being the first Sudbury building to receive a gold certification from the Rick Hansen Foundation. L’Arche Sudbury Place will have three distinct spaces (apartments, a community participation space, and administration), which will bridge and support a variety of community participation, developmental and support services in the region.

28 Shared Living Apartments

10 units for people with intellectual disabilities to live, 16 units available to rent to the public, 1 training unit for TIFS (Trying it on for size)

1 Gathering Space

A space to encourage residents and visitors to interact.

1 Administrative Space

A space for administration functions and management of the complex.

The Need And Our Response

Whether living alone or with ageing parents, adults with developmental challenges struggle to be included in their community in ways that give meaning to their lives.

Accessible, affordable and neighbourly apartment spaces are very rare. People do not want to live in isolation. Human connections and support are critical to their good mental and physical health.

There are also gaps in available supports. Many families provide the support their adult children require. But as parents age, they fear there will no longer be supports available for them. They look for housing with supports built in, but the waitlist is long.

Our goal is to offer a person-centred home and community for people of all abilities. L’Arche Sudbury Place will be a multiuse housing complex that will nuture interdependence within a mixed population and offer activites and services that address a spectrum of needs.

We see our future involving more activity-based offerings and opportunities both within the building and our wonderful city. Our goal is not to duplicate services already offered, but to help people access and fully engage with what is available, and to offer other opportunities where there may be gaps.

L'Arche Sudbury Place will offer a unique model that fills a gap in living options available to persons with developmental challanges and their families/caregivers.
