Leadership Training

Assistants will be supported to learn and grow through their daily lives in their home and community, and, through our more formal Leadership Training Programs.

Much of the learning at L’Arche takes place as we live our day-to-day lives.

From your first day in L’Arche, you will be supported to learn and succeed. This takes a variety of forms:

  • A supportive House Leader who provides up front direction and guidance, as well as, coaching and feedback.
  • As a House Team you will meet weekly to plan, discuss challenges, seek advice, and learn from one another’s experiences.
  • Roles & Goals meetings are a regular one-on-one time with your House Leader where together you will look ahead and plan your priorities.
  • Feedback at L’Arche is balanced and supportive and includes: identifying your gifts and strengths; sharing the appreciation the members of your home hold for you and for how you are living your role; and clear priorities and direction for how you can improve in the role.

We expect you to learn and grow in the Assistant role, and we are committed to providing the support you need. Asking questions and being curious is a good thing.

In addition to “Learning through Living,” the L’Arche Leadership Development Model incorporates several formal learning opportunities to support you to develop your gifts, learn new skills, and grow in your role:

  • Leadership 101 – Basic leadership mindsets, processes, and tools for each new and potential leader (i.e. goal-setting, giving/receiving feedback, reviews, Roles and Goals/Circles of Learning Meetings and more!)
  • Leadership 201 – Supporting those in leadership roles to develop supervisory skills like delegation, planning/leading meetings, leading with authority from within the circle, coaching, mentoring, and more!
  • Courageous Feedback – A course for more experienced leaders to practice having challenging conversations, building trust, and becoming more courageous leaders.

These hybrid courses are offered through our Learning Management System with both pan-Canadian live sessions, asynchronous training, and individual work/practice in your community. All successful participants receive a certificate at the end of the training.
