Sharon Oliver
Board Member

• Raised 4 wonderful children and now am grandmother of 4 amazing grandchildren, Matthew, aged 7, who lives here in Sudbury, Summer, aged 18 months, who lives in Toronto, Tyler, who plays hockey for Grand Rapids Griffins, and Even who is a student at LoEllen Park Secondary School here in Sudbury. I have lived in the Sudbury area my entire life, attended Catholic elementary schools and Catholic secondary school, Laurentian University, (B.A.), Hamilton Teachers= College, and Nipissing University (B.Ed.).

• Began teaching career with Coniston Separate School Board, which amalgamated with Sudbury Separate School Board, then became SCDSB. Taught everything from kindergarten and primary, junior and intermediate grades, Core French, multi-grade classes and students with disabilities; the first school I taught at was the school I attended as a child. Then in 2003 I became principal of that same school and retired from that position in 2010 after 7 wonderful years there. Talk about full circle!

• Served in school administration for 12 years.

• Served as Chairperson of Catholic Principals Council of Ontario Professional Development Committee for 4 years, and was a member of the CPCO Policy Committee for 1 year.

• Served as Chairperson of Northern Ontario Catholic Curriculum Cooperative Board of Directors for 5 years, 2005-2010.

• Served in parish life as chairperson of liturgy committee, member of parish council and of parish leadership team, music coordinator and cantor.

• Received Trustees Chairperson Award for making a difference in Catholic Education in my board, 2008.

• Received the Catholic Principals Council of Ontario Award for Outstanding Principal of the Year in 2009.

• Truly believe in servant leadership, and always strove to exemplify that in my role as a Catholic leader both in schools and parishes.

• I have known about L'Arche for years, especially as a result of their presence at my parish for worship. I was drawn to L'Arche several years ago because of my cousin Trudy. She was living at Rideau Regional Centre and the centre was being disbanded. Since she was originally from this area, and her family all now lived in the USA, we thought it would be good if she found a place here in Sudbury, close to other relatives, aunts, uncles, cousins. By the grace of God, she found a home at Bethany House, here in Sudbury, and the rest is history!
